ABSTRACT
Diarrhea is a major health problem that frequently affects children worldwide, including in Indonesia, and is the second leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age. According to 2022 data from the World Health Organization (WHO), diarrhea causes approximately 525,000 child deaths per year globally, with the majority of cases occurring in developing countries like Indonesia. At the national level, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) reports that diarrhea contributes to 10-15% of child visits to health facilities, with an incidence reaching more than 1 million cases per year. Although this figure is higher in toddlers, elementary school-aged children (6-12 years) are also vulnerable, especially in school environments where social interaction is high and hygiene is difficult to maintain strictly. Diarrhea is defined as the passage of loose or watery stools (BAB) more than three times a day, which can be caused by bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, or non-infectious factors such as food intolerance. In elementary school children, diarrhea not only impacts physical health but also disrupts learning, as sick children are often absent from school, experience decreased concentration, and even experience chronic malnutrition if not properly managed.
